Four students of the Applied Bachelor Program in Telecommunication Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Politeknik Negeri Semarang, namely Laras, Lintang Cahya Riskia, Muhammad Hutaraya Dewa, and Muhammad Luqman Khanafi, successfully presented their Final Project in an examination held on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, at the East Telecommunication Laboratory, 2nd Floor, Politeknik Negeri Semarang.
Their Final Project is entitled “Design and Development of an Internet of Things-Based Tidal Monitoring System Using the Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) Protocol in the Tanjung Emas and Morodemak Areas.” The project focuses on the development of a real-time tidal monitoring system intended to support early warning efforts for tidal flooding in coastal areas.
The system integrates several technologies, including ultrasonic water-level sensors, ESP32-based processing units, LoRa communication, solar-powered energy supply, internet-connected gateways, a MySQL database, a CodeIgniter-based monitoring website, and WhatsApp notifications. The monitoring system was implemented in two coastal areas, namely Tanjung Emas, Semarang, and Morodemak, Demak, using several sensor nodes and gateways to transmit measurement data to a centralized server.
The students carried out a number of technical evaluations covering sensor accuracy, wireless communication performance, autonomous power supply, notification delivery, and system stability. The project demonstrates the integration of telecommunication engineering, Internet of Things technology, embedded systems, wireless networking, renewable energy, and web-based information systems for coastal environmental monitoring.
The Final Project was supervised by Dr. Amin Suharjono as the Main Supervisor and Budi Basuki Subagio, M.Eng. as the Co-Supervisor.
The examination committee consisted of Dr. Amin Suharjono as Chair of the Examination Committee, Dewi Anggraeni, M.Pd. as Secretary, Dr. Muhammad Anif as Examiner 1, Thomas Agung Setyawan, M.T. as Examiner 2, and Ari Sriyanto Nugroho, M.Sc. as Examiner 3.
During the examination, the students presented the design, implementation, testing, and evaluation of their system and responded to questions from the examiners regarding sensor performance, wireless communication architecture, data processing, power management, system reliability, and the application of LoRa and LoRaWAN technologies.
Through this Final Project, the students are expected to strengthen their competence in designing and integrating telecommunication and IoT systems that can provide practical solutions to real-world problems, particularly in monitoring coastal conditions and supporting early mitigation of tidal flooding.
